Butterflyway Rosedale YYC

We are a resident-driven group with a passion for helping our at-risk pollinators and wildlife.  Our plan is to approach that task on multiple fronts, including the formation of our Butterflyway Rosedale YYC group to develop “mini habitat patches” within private gardens” that expand our pollinators food resources and help diversify plant habitats.

We are also exploring other strategies including:

  • Developing a program to monitor tree canopy growth/reduction in Rosedale – on private properties. There is a direct correlation between greenery and heat within urban communities. We want to ensure Rosedale remains a “leafy green” community.
  • Developing a program to encourage residents to watch for all types of pollinators and wildlife in the community to help identify habitats and habits. The Get to Know Your Wild Neighbours program is designed to raise awareness of these critical urban habitats and help ensure they remain in the community.
Insects are in decline and every patch of targeted native plants provides a network of food sources which not only helps them survive, but also increases critically needed biodiversity – even in densely populated urban areas!

Participants will have an opportunity to learn from Master Gardeners, meet like-minded neighbours and
Participate in a “plant sharing” network to offset costs and increase plant diversity.
Participants will receive a ”Butterflyway” Garden sign and, of course,
our hard-working Rosedale Reporter editors will be interested in hearing how we are doing!
Our initial goal was to establish at least 20 new pollinator-friendly gardens in our community AND be recognized as a community member of the national Butterflyway Pathway. We were officially recognized on the national Butterflyway map in early 2026.  Our current goal is to expand our local group by 10-15% residents each year and, whenever possible,  encourage neighbouring communities to join us.

The pathway “gardens can be any size or shape and can:

be a few new plants in an established garden
› a separate new patch of native plants or wildflowers in your garden
a new “alley garden pollinator patch” along your back fence
or any form that works for you!
We have a resident Master Gardener who is available to assist our members with one-on-one home visits, if requested.
We provide garden signs to identify you are a participant in this very important project
